Nick & Tiffany Wimmer, Executive Directors/ FoundersNick & Tiffany have been witnesses of this great undertaking since it's inception in 2003. With a passion for kids, families and camp life, they have watched as their dream of starting a summer camp and retreat center has finally become a reality. With over 22 combined years in camp and education fields, they have had the privilege of working with children and youth in various settings. As graduates of Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, FL, Tiffany received her degree in primary education and biblical studies while Nick received his B.A. in religious studies and philosophy. During their time in college they worked with children and youth in the classroom, local churches, through missions efforts in third world countries, in afterschool programs and at several camps including Kanakuk Kamps, Camp Good News, COS Day Camp and Deep Creek Camp. Nick and Tiffany serve as the executive directors for Camp Canaan and are also on the Board of Trustees ex officio. They are both certified educators, climbing instructors and are first-aid and CPR certified. Nick also has his certification as a kayak instructor from BackCountry Institute and is an accredited teacher in the Orton-Gillingham method for multi-sensory learning. Their focused vision for Canaan has remained since the beginning : To provide an environment for people to truly discover their purpose and find joy for life through the building of great relationships, through the beauty of a unique setting and through the challenging and exciting programs that only a camp environment can offer. Nick & Tiffany have two wild and wonderful boys, Kaison (4) and Finneas (2) and live on the Island in Rock Hill.
Clay Neal, Operations DirectorClay has over 15 years of experience in youth ministry and outdoor education. He is certified as a belay and climbing instructor through the Back Country Institute. He has over 6 years experience as the site manager for Rock Hill's Alpine Tower. Camping and Hiking are at the top of his “To Do” list! Clay is also a proficient drummer, avid listener of music and ex-radio producer. His wife Kim serves on the Retreat Staff and educates their two boys at home. Asa (age 10) loves music and theatre and Ethan (age 6) likes Star Wars, soccer and football. The Neals have a dog (Leo) and a cat (Callie Mittens). Callie Mittens was not present on picture day.
Matt began working for Camp Canaan in the late fall of 2004 as a volunteer kayak instructor. Also a graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University, Matt received his B.A. in Communications with a minor in Biblical Studies. In 2008, Matt moved to Boston and began working as a case manager for mentally handicapped adults. In 2009, he married his dream girl Melissa and they moved back to the Carolinas in March 2010. Matt serves as the Program Director and heads up all of Canaan's retreat, day event and adventure programs. devotes his time and energy to helping lead adventure trips and facilitate the retreats hosted by camp. Matt's passion is to see people be totally free and having fun. His enthusiasm and comic relief gives camp life literally the "life" it has. Matt is a certified Kayak and Climbing instructor and has also been working with kids in various roles for the past 10 years.
David McGrath, Summer DirectorDavid and Amy McGrath come to us from Orlando, Florida, each with over five years of teaching and coaching experience. David is the Athletic Director at a private Christian academy in inner-city Orlando, and is known for his exceptional skill in creating unique and educational outdoor activities. He is a favorite with the students, coaching soccer and basketball teams in his off-hours. David’s goal is to bring each individual kid to his or her full potential through organized physical activity. Additionally, David is an expert guitar player and musician, giving one more valuable aspect for campers to enjoy. Amy taught high school-level History and Health for 5 years in the Orange County Public School system. She is currently teaching Life Management Skills through Florida Virtual Schools and also coaches girls’ soccer. Amy is currently training for the Chicago Marathon in October 2009. Her genuine enthusiasm opens doors for her to be able to share guidance and hope to kids in a lasting way. David and Amy have two boys: Grady (2) and Nolan (1).
Carrie Williams, Event & Marketing CoordinatorCarrie, her husband C.C. and their dog Maggie have traveled the country and are happy to call Rock Hill home. She Graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor’s degree in Management of Recreation and Facility Management. Carrie has over 10 years of event planning and group sales experience in the Recreation/Tourism industry from Beaver Creek Ski Resort, Wisp Ski Resort, Adventure Sports Center International, North American River Runners and others. Carrie coordinates Canaan Events, Marketing and Retreats and has the passion for sharing adventure with others. Camping, paddling, hiking, and crafting are a few of her favorite hobbies.
