The Jim & Aana Lisa Whatley Scholarship Fund helps make summer camp possible for children who would otherwise not be able to experience life on The Island. Something amazing happens in the life of a camper who comes to Canaan, and we don’t want anyone to miss out! Summer scholarships are made possible, in part, by generous donations and from funds raised at our annual Fall Benefit.

Award amount: 50%, 60% or 75% of camp tuition
Eligibility: Based on Federal Poverty Levels

Program Overview

Our annual goal is to provide scholarships for at least 35% of children registered for our summer programs. We award need-based summer camp scholarships for ages 5-13 on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarships are available for Day Camp and Overnight Camp but do not include our Counselor in Training (CIT) program.

  • Scholarships are limited to one (1) week of camp per summer per child.
  • Scholarship spots are saved offline. If awarded, you will receive an email on how to register. Please do not register before receiving your award letter.
  • Scholarship awards are based on Federal Poverty Levels (FPL), which considers income and the number of people in the household.
  • Scholarships cover 50%, 60%, or 75% of the total tuition of one week of camp.
  • The remaining tuition is your responsibility to cover.
  • Sibling discounts may be combined with scholarship funds.

Additional Details

Scholarship applications for Summer 2025 will be accepted between DATE TBD through DATE TBD, or while funds last.

  • Scholarships are awarded weekly.
  • Applications received before Wednesday at 5 pm are reviewed by the following Thursday.
  • Application decisions are communicated by email on Friday.
  • If awarded, you have one (1) week to accept or decline the scholarship.
  • Failure to respond in one (1) week will result in a forfeiture of awarded funds.
  • Forfeited awards are added back to the Fund and offered to another family.
  • Applications received after 5 pm on Wednesday are reviewed the following week.

By accepting an awarded scholarship, you will enter into a financial agreement with Camp Canaan that will require you to:

  • Access a computer and WiFi to complete online registration.
  • Register your camper using a debit/credit card.
  • Make a $25 deposit for each child at the time of registration (subtracted from your balance).
  • Select a payment option for your tuition balance during checkout.
  • Pay tuition balances by DATE TBD.
  • Have sufficient funds available before each tuition balance installment.
  • Reply promptly to notifications of declined payments.
  • Forfeit your scholarship(s) if declined payments are not promptly addressed.
